How to make your own tatted table linen

This article will give you detailed instructions on how to make your own tatted table linen.

Materials List The following materials are needed in order to create this piece: Linen Linen Stiffener Ruler Iron Scissors Edge Guide Foot Water soluble extra thick cotton thread

Project Instructions Your first step is to determine the overall size of your piece. Determine the finished square size for your piece and then cut your linen four inches longer on each side. If, for example, you wanted a finished piece to be 18 inches square, you would cut a 22 inch square.

Fold and hem a two inch seam on one side of the fabric. You will them want to create a one inch hem by opening your first hem and folding it in half. The new hems should then be pressed and opened flat. The same process should be completed on each side of the fabric.

Mitered corners can be created by folding in the corners and matching up the ironed lines. A point in the corner should be created by pressing the corners in place and then unfolding the corner and placing the right sides together. You can now stitch your fabric from the folded edge halfway to the outer pressed hem. You can now reveal the mitered edge by cutting off the corner and turning it over. Fold in place any excess linen. This same process should be completed on each corner.

An edge guide foot should be used along the inner folded edge to create a finished look. Figure out which side you want on top.

The pieces should now be sprayed with a stiffener and pressed firmly.

Place the thick thread in the machine and switch to a top stitch needle. Now is the time to create your tatted look. You can do this by holding the stabilizer along the linens edge and sewing a decorative stitch half on and half off the linen. This same process should be completed on all sides of the material.

The excess stabilizer can then be cut off. To remove the rest of the stabilizer you can place the linen in a tub of water to dissolve it.
