Creating round table linens

This is a great article for those who would like to create a round tablecloth. The detailed instructions provided work equally well for both accent and dining tables.

Your first step is to determine the required amount of fabric for your tabelcloth. This is easily done by calculating two times the height of your table and then adding the diameter. The standard width for most home decorating linen is 54 inches, so most likely you will only need to purchase two times the length. You will need to make a square from your fabric prior to creating your circle. The size of the square should be 102 inches long on each side and 54 inches plus 54 inches. Using twice the length gives you a fabric dimension of 5 yards.

The linen should now be cut into two equal lengths. You find it much easier to achieve a straight cut if you fold the linen and cut along the fold.

To avoid having the seam for your tablecloth run right down the middle you will need to cut one of your piece in half lengthwise. Again, you will get the best results if you use the fold and cut method mentioned above.

Using a inch seam allowance, sew or serge the three pieces together. Now it is time to press the cloth, then fold it in half, and then in half one more time.

A linen marker should be tied with a string. On the corner of the fold piece secure the other end of the string. Using the string and marker just as you would a compass, draw a quarter circle on the fabric.

To get a round table linen you will just need to cut along the line you have just drawn. Put a narrow rolled hem foot on your machine and set it for a straight stitch in order to put a hem on your tablecloth. Begin by making two narrow folds in the fabric and setting it under your foot for two or four stitches. The linen should then be put under the needle and into the curl of the foot.
