The true beauty of linen
The art of fine linen creation goes all the way back to the ancient Egyptians. The process is long and painstaking, turning flax into fabric in a way that highlights the natural beauty of linen. Often machine processing will need to be supplemented by hand work. This art of creation is just one of the reasons people tend to be passionate about their fine linens. Another reason is the strength of linen; although it looks delicate it is actually stronger than both wool and cotton. Only silk is stronger than linen. Linen is a very durable fabric. This durability is demonstrated in products like powerful sail cloths, Egyptian mummy wrappings, and heirloom table linens. One of the interesting properties on linen is that it gets stronger as it gets wet, which makes it the ideal cloth to use for a variety of household items including tea towels. Linen is often woven with fibers of cotton or rayon to minimize its natural tendency toward creasing and wrinkling. Another great attribute of linen is that it cools you faster than other fabrics, even cotton. While this does not make much of a difference for table linens, it does explain why linen is used so often for summer clothing. When it comes to table linens, there is no other fabric that can beat the crisp, clean feel of linen.
